Mr.Eiichi Shibusawa and brick made in Fukaya
Mr. Eiichi Shibusawa was born in Fukaya city in 1840. He developed many kinds of domestic industries and established many modern enterprises, including Daiichi Kokuritsu Ginko bank (now Daiichi Kangyo ginko bank) in Meiji period, from 1867 to 1912.
He founded Fukaya Brick Manufacture Company in Joshikimen, Fukaya city in 1887. The company used the newest Hoffman kiln at that time, which was imported from Germany, and succeeded in producing high quality brick. Now, the old buildings, for example Tokyo station, Akasaka Rikyu and so on, are made of brick produced in Fukaya.
Many buildings of Takizawa Sake brewery are made of Fukaya brick, too. The big chimney is more than 30 meters high. It withstood several earthquakes and attacks in war. Now, it rises magnificently.
Brick is excel in keeping temperature and humidity constant. It is very good for Sake brewing. When you pass along the alley facing sake shop, you see the brick wall. You are as if you were in Meiji period.
